Niche at Gouarec

Never have I seen so many niches with statues in such a small area.
There are also other un-statued niches in neighbouring brick-built, and
therefore more recent houses.
Are or were the people of Gouarec particularly religious, I wonder?
Or is there a more mundane explanation?
