Not exactly Bristol fashion
Shipshape and Bristol fashion is an English saying, meaning by now,
everything is neat and tidy, with no rubbish strewn around.
Its origins are nautical.
Before the construction of the 'cut' and the floating harbour, the port of
Bristol had a very high tidal range of 13 metres, the second highest in the
world.
Moored ships would be aground at low tide and, because of their keels,
would fall to one side. If everything was not stowed away tidily or tied down,
chaos would ensue.
